I fished around in my backpack for the package. Finally, I pulled out the plastic bag. I extended my hand across the space that separated me from the most gorgeous human being on the face of the planet: the prize rose in the king’s garden, the angelfish of the sea, the egret of the sky, the tigress of the jungle. How could someone so beautiful ever be in the presence of me, an average Joe?

As I handed it to her, she looked over at me. Her amethyst eyes opened wide. She stared at me. I saw my own reflection in her pupils. She gently extended her hand, and I gave her the bag.

She took out the Band-Aid box and studied it. When she finally lifted her eyes from the present, a miracle happened. First, her eyes lit up. It seemed as though her eyes reflected the sparkle of all the stars in the cosmos. She smiled and then her lips parted, revealing a full, brilliant smile and perfect white teeth. That smile was the best present you could ever have. She was beyond beautiful; she was dazzling. Beyond any word a human could ever come up with. Then as soon as it had happened, she turned and a wave of silken hair blocked my view of her magnificence.

Breathless. I was breathless.

Then I heard someone yapping at me, pulling me away from my brief sojourn in heaven and back to a dull gray classroom.

“Jaden!”

I looked up at Miss Carlson, who was staring down at me like a hawk, ravenous, just waiting to rip the meat from my bones.

“What?”

She slapped my essay down on my desk. I snatched it up. Embarrassed, for on it was an oversized F. I thought I heard someone chuckle.

“Pay attention, Jaden. Life doesn’t wait for those who have their heads wrapped up in their own imagination!”

You have no clue, lady.

She walked away, handing out other essay papers. I heard laughter, moans, and yelps of excitement. My essay was covered with red marks; there was more red than there were typed words. I zoomed in on a sentence in the margin; the words were marked with a red star:
